Believing in Change: With God, All Things are Possible
Jun 15, 2024
By The Rev. Marcia Parkinson-Harrison
In a world often overshadowed by division and discrimination, it is our faith in God and our belief in change that propel us forward. As people of God, we are called to be the light in the darkness, to lead by example, and to embody the teachings of love, equality, and justice. This Juneteenth, we reflect not only on the historical significance of the end of slavery in the United States but also on our ongoing mission to eradicate racism in all its forms.
The church has always been a beacon of hope and a cornerstone of community. It is within these sacred walls that we find the strength, courage, and resolve to confront the injustices of the world. As members of the Anti-Racism Committee, we recognize that our journey towards a more just and equitable society begins right here, in our church. Our purpose is to live like Christ in our communities, striving for a world where equity and justice prevail.
We are called to lead this charge, to be the forerunner of change. Our faith teaches us that with God, all things are possible. This includes the monumental task of overcoming racism. But we cannot do this alone. We need the support and participation of our entire church community. The priority of our Synod is to have community-oriented pastors in all viable congregations, ensuring that we have leaders who are committed to justice and equity.
We are seeking volunteers who are deeply passionate about justice and committed to making a meaningful impact. Education plays a pivotal role in our mission, which is why we're arranging anti-racism training sessions covering essential topics such as understanding racism, identifying unconscious bias, fostering effective communication, and nurturing inclusive environments.
As we embark on this journey, it is important to approach it with discernment. We must seek God’s guidance and wisdom in all that we do. Discernment involves prayerfully considering our actions, being open to learning and growth, and making decisions that align with our values and faith. Doing so ensures that our efforts are grounded in love and righteousness. A key principle in our mission is to ensure reparative justice and advocacy, addressing the wrongs of the past and working towards a future where equity is the norm.
There's a place for you in this movement, and we extend our invitation to everyone. If you're not drawn to be a trainer, we urge you to join us at an anti-racism workshop. Together, we can cultivate a community where every individual is valued and respected.
On this Juneteenth, let us reaffirm our commitment to change. Let us remember that with God, all things are possible, including eradicating racism. As people of God, we have the power to make a profound impact.
Can the church be viable if we ignore the sin of racism and all it entails? I say no, but this is a question we must all answer for ourselves. Let us lead by example, educate ourselves, and work together to create a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Join us in this noble endeavor, and together, let us build a future free from racism.
We look forward to your participation and support in our anti-racism training and initiatives. May God bless our efforts and guide us towards a more just and loving community.
