UKRAINIAN RELIEF EFFORTS

SUPPORTING OUR UKRAINIAN SIBLINGS IN CRISIS

March 3, 2022

In February of 2014 Russian forces began a conflict with neighboring Ukraine through the annexation of Krimea. After eight years of cold tension, Russia once again escalated the conflict with an invasion into Ukraine on February 24 of this year. This conflict has led to over one-million Ukrainians, mostly women and children, forced to flee their homes and seek refuge on the western boarder of the country or neighboring nations like Poland, Hungary and Slovenia.

In an effort to support our siblings in strife, as is our mission as Church, the Metropolitan New York Synod wishes to share resources from the ELCA and partner organizations. Please explore the links below and consider helping out however you are able.

For over 80 years, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service has been a champion for refugees and migrants from around the globe. Its legacy of compassionate service has made a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have found safety and hope in America’s communities

On February 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced military operations in Ukraine that appeared to serve as a declaration of war. Already, more than 1.7 million refugees have fled Ukraine since the invasion. At least 850,000 Ukrainians have been internally displaced, though there are likely millions.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service stands in solidarity with our Ukrainian neighbors and is dedicated to supporting Ukrainian refugees and immigrants however possible.
