Gloria Dei, our Latin name, means “the glory of God,” and proclaims what we still seek to be – a sign of God’s wonderful presence in our local community. Centered in Word and Sacrament, we find our purpose in weekly worship, where we sing of God’s glory and offer our praise; and at worship we are fed and nourished for lives of loving service. As one of our cherished hymns puts it, may “service be our sure vocation, courage be our daily breath…” (Rise, O Church, Like Christ Arisen, ELW #548).
In 2022 they collaborated with King of Kings in Melville, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Huntington Station, to become part of United Lutheran Church of Long Island. Currently the congregations all worship on Sunday at the St. Peter's Campus.
Joseph's Storehouse–The Food Pantry at Gloria Dei
Joseph's Storehouse is a large and busy food pantry that offers produce, meat and fish, refrigerated and frozen foods, baked goods, canned goods, etc. Affiliated with
Long Island Cares and
Island Harvest food banks, we offer “client choice shopping,” which means that clients may select their own food based on family needs and preferences. In 2019, the pantry served over 4,000 families and 15,000 individuals.
The Joseph’s Storehouse Closet opened at the food pantry in January 2023, and its visitors benefit weekly from a selection of clothes, shoes, costume jewelry, and small housewares. We do need to continually restock the Closet to keep up with the demand. If you have gently-used adult or children's clothes or household items you no longer need, please consider donating them to the Closet. Donations can be dropped off at the pantry Tuesday through Saturday mornings. Any questions, contact Kathy Readinger (631) 742-4078.
Boy Scouts | Girl Scouts
Gloria Dei sponsors Boy Scout Troop 34 and Cub Scout Pack 406.
The scouts are active in church outreach through our Food Pantry, neighborhood clean-ups,
and any number of other service projects to benefit the community. We love our Scouts!
