St. Peter’s Lutheran Church
11 Ogden Court,
Huntington Station, NY 11746
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church has been doing ministry in Huntington Station since 1908. At that time the town was known as Fairground, after the fairgrounds and racetrack located there. When the coming railroad was denied permission to lay tracks through Huntington Village, the LIRR was forced to build the “Huntington Station” two miles to the south with a connecting trolly line to the village. St. Peter’s first location was space rented in a small Presbyterian chapel on NY Avenue.
As the first and only LCMS Lutheran Church in the area, our founding membership grew quickly. Having outgrown our rented space, we purchased land on Fairgrounds Ave and in 1912, dedicated our first church building. We continued to grow and put on an addition in 1924. Through social events, outreach to the community and a popular minister, we had become a viable and valued church and after the end of WWII our little white church was again bursting at the seams. In 1951 we purchased another plot of land farther south on Ogden Court and by 1955 we were dedicating our new “Christian Education Building”. Phase II came in 1969 when we completed a large, connecting sanctuary complete with a bell tower, fabulous pipe organ and magnificent stained glass window proclaiming Christ as “The Light of the World."
In 1977 we joined with other Lutheran churches to form the AELC then together with other church bodies to form the more inclusive ELCA, allowing more women equality and enabling us to work with other non-Lutheran Churches in the area.
In 2022 they collaborated with King of Kings in Melville, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Huntington Station, to become part of United Lutheran Church of Long Island. Currently the congregations all worship on Sunday at the St. Peter's Campus
